Holiday Decor Ideas for Smaller Spaces
The festive season is upon us, and at least a few of you who have recently moved (or are considering a move) to retirement living are probably going to be decorating a smaller space. Bigger decorations may not fit or feel overwhelming in your suite.
Not to worry though, you don’t need to buy a bunch of new decorations. Here are a few simple and inexpensive decor ideas to add a touch of holiday magic to your new space.
Even if you don’t have space for a large tree, there are other ways to incorporate greenery. Garlands, wreaths, and branches can be used in different configurations to stunning effect. Wrap one around your windows, bed frame, or mantle. Use a wreath to frame a small centrepiece. Put together a winter bouquet with pines and firs in a traditional flowerpot. Some designers even tack branches to walls in a tree-like formation.
Ornaments, with their shimmering details and glitz, make great accents even when they aren’t on a tree. Hang them from light fixtures, arrange bulbs in a vase, or space them out in a garland.
String lights are extremely versatile, take up virtually no space, and bring the rest of the decor to life. String it up or bundle it in a festive little nest. Lanterns, if you can accommodate them, are also a wonderful old-time touch, and candles offer a classic holiday atmosphere. Less may be more in some situations, but more is more when it comes to holiday lighting — especially when space is limited.
As the first thing people see when they enter your home and the last thing they see when they leave, your front door is a good opportunity to make an impression. It doesn’t have to be over the top though — a nice wreath, a card collage, a classy advent calendar. But if you prefer something a little showier, how about an entryway eave.
When space is limited, it’s often the soft touches that make the difference. Bedside tables, bookshelves, desks, coffee tables, your bar, hutches — all these features offer opportunities to add festive accents. If it feels cluttered, consider temporarily swapping a feature or piece of decor with something a little more wintry. Maybe a piece of art, a craft, or another decoration.
Throws, festive tableware, and bedding are all opportunities to do something different for the holidays. Consider layering different patterns, colours and textures to suit the winter season, like fur or tartan.
