Nestle Into November: Author Meet-Up, Art Workshops, & More at Sorrento
November may just be the “Wednesday” of the end of the year: It’s a transition between the excitement of Halloween and the busyness of the holiday season. And that makes it a good chance to take a break, slow down, and enjoy the fall. This month, Sorrento is creating plenty of opportunities to nestle into the colder weather with an author meet and greet, art workshops, and a talent show, all on top of our regular pizza and pasta nights, food demos, and live entertainment.
Here’s a breakdown of November events at Sorrento Retirement Residence.
All events are free for residents and just $5 for guests, unless noted otherwise.
The colder weather is the perfect excuse to stay in with a hot drink and a good book. At Sorrento’s upcoming author meet and greet, we’re featuring three Italian-Canadian authors based in the Toronto area: Maria Zarrone, Gianna Patriarca, and Bruna Di Giuseppe.
Zarrone is a writer of historical fiction whose latest novel, Love and Poppies, explores Italy during the Second World War — a fitting read for the month of Remembrance Day.
Patriarca is an award-winning poet and author of 11 books, including Italian Women and Other Tragedies, which was runner-up for the Milton Acorn People’s Poetry Award.
Di Giuseppe is the author of several works exploring her experience as an Italian immigrant to Canada.
Sorrento’s monthly Port of Call event explores a country’s culture and food. This month, we’ll be bringing a little sunshine to the season with an afternoon of Mexican culture with homemade nachos. You can also enjoy live entertainment featuring Viviana from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.
Sorrento invites residents and loved ones to join us in honouring those who have served and continue to serve in our military. We’ll observe two minutes of silence to reflect on their courage and sacrifices, and express our gratitude for their dedication and service to our country.
Sorrento will be hosting two art workshops in November. The first will be a button crafting workshop on November 17, and the second will be an espresso fridge magnet workshop on November 23. In both, residents will learn a new skill and leave with a new souvenir to decorate their fridges or clothing.
You can also saddle up for a little southern excitement at Sorrento’s western-inspired Hoe Down. Enjoy country music, light refreshments, and western-themed games for a lively afternoon of good old-fashioned fun. And if you come early, you can catch live entertainment with Naomi from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.
Sorrento will cap off the month with the Sorrento Talent Show. At this special event, you’ll get the chance to admire the creative talents of all the residents and staff at Sorrento, and you may even be able to show off some of your own. Contact us or visit our front desk to learn how you can be a part of the show.
