Four Classic Holiday Movies to Enjoy This Season
At Sorrento Retirement Residence, we are lucky to have our very own movie theatre for residents to enjoy movie nights any time they wish. It’s a very popular spot. We wanted to share some of our favourite holiday movies, from the classics to a few more recent blockbusters.
If you’re a fan of the classic black and white musical, you’ll love Holiday Inn. Starring Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby, the movie follows a WWII-era love triangle set in 1940s New York City over the holidays. Fun fact: this particular film was the world’s first introduction to the song “White Christmas,” which would become hugely popular after the film’s success. The movie is less about Christmas, and more about romance, so be warned!
Don’t you just love the fantasy that a “heaven-sent” guest could enter our lives to guide us down the right path? This film follows a family in a poverty-stricken area of New York City (what is it about New York City during Christmas that’s so irresistible?) who are sent a guide from heaven to help them realize what’s important in life. With starring performances by Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston, this is a feel-good movie by the end of it. Life lessons and New York City during the holidays? Magic. Sign us up!
We know that we all love New York City during Christmas, but how do we feel about the holidays in London, England? This movie gives us a taste of trademark British humour, romance, and holiday cheer, wrapped up into a complex narrative that gives new meaning to the expression “small world.” Love triangles, affairs, grief, and love at first sight. We’d call this a winner.
Sometimes you just need a good laugh. Grab your favourite movie snack and a drink and get ready for Tim Allen’s loveable comedy and Jamie Lee Curtis’ facial expressions. The story follows a family that loves the holidays, in a town that loves the holidays. When their daughter leaves home to do humanitarian work, the empty nesters decide to skip their usual festivities. The chaos begins when their daughter calls home and explains she will be back for their annual Christmas celebration. Can they pull it off in just a few hours? You’ll have to watch to find out!
